Testimonials

"Had a wonderful tuning and keyboard service which has now made my piano play like a dream.

Now that Steve has fitted a practice pedal I can play even longer!"

Billy Walsh 5/2/21

“Steve did a great job on my piano, which hadn't been tuned for over 5 years and had just been moved from the north of the country. Serviced the keyboard and action, fixed a broken string and tuned with real care and attention to the age of the instrument - put some solid hours into it! I learnt a lot about pianos along the way and Steve was great about explaining everything he was doing. Would definitely recommend, especially if your piano needs some TLC.”

Emma Cooper 10/2/21

“Steve is so knowledgeable, professional and diligent. He did a full day of work with my piano with a full keyboard service and tuning. The price was a lot less than expected for the time he took on my piano.

The result is a piano that 10 times nicer to play with reactive keys and more range and depth in the volume of the piano.

I would definitely use Steve again for my piano maintenance”

Katie Goodliffe 20/3/21

“Great service, my piano sounds so much brighter now. Very informative, friendly and knowledgeable too.”

Jessica Toogood 20/4/21

Services

Fine Tuning

Usage and environment can affect the frequency of fine tuning, which is typically between 6-12 months. An assessment enables an accurate scope and frequency of work to be determined and can be adapted according to the clients' needs.

Pitch Raising

If an instrument has not been tuned for several years, a pitch raise will be performed to reach the desired pitch. A second tuning pass for fine tuning completes the process. The stability of the instrument will be assessed and if required, a follow up visit ensures the tuning is stabilised.

Regulation

Adjustments to the instrument are termed regulation and common examples are - damper regulation, checking distances, let off, blow distance, adjustment of key dip, key levelling, keyboard servicing and voicing.

Other Services

Hammers

Hammer work includes refacing, string mating, casting, travelling and hammer spacing.

When it comes to something as precious as a piano, you should never compromise with its upkeep and tuning when needed. However, coming from the thousands of options out there, it can be hard to find the best piano tuner in Crawley that can do just the right job for you.

How often should I have my piano tuned?

Before we delve in deep into the specifics, it's important you get your fundamentals right and truly understand when it is the right time to look for piano repairs.

The precise answer for how often you should get your piano tuned depends on your piano's usage and condition. If you play several hours every day and need to ensure you offer the best possible performance, it is recommended to tune pianos once a week. It is an ideal way to increase the longevity of your favourite instrument and enjoy playing instead of bothering with repairs that are relatively harder to fix.

However, if you are an occasional piano player who plays piano for fun, it is ideal to have your piano tuned at least once or twice a year. As for family piano players, if you have a child learning to play the piano, you should tune your piano no less than every 6 months.

Another thing to bear in mind is the humidity and temperature factor that has the potential to cause permanent damage to your pianos. The environment around any instrument plays a huge role in making or breaking the health of your piano.

Seasons with high humidity are known to swell the soundboard and loosens the piano strings, eventually leading to deteriorating the quality of performance over time. It’s definitely worth considering piano services near you from a qualified technician to keep your piano in exceptional shape.

With an average of about 220 strings of varying frequencies and pitches, let's pedal and fiddle towards a better understanding of the importance of proper piano tuning in the picturesque district of West Sussex.

What Causes My Piano To Go Out Of Tune?

Whether it is for personal use or for delighting a huge crowd in a concert hall, keeping your piano in tune is necessary for maintaining the value, condition, and function of the piano. Tuning involves adjusting and improving the strings' tension to make sure that each of them vibrates harmoniously with one another at a certain frequency. We’ve rounded up the various reasons why your piano plays out of tune.

Moving The Instrument Frequently

Committing to a single location would hands down work best for your piano as moving it around even for small distances may cause it to lose its tuning. The less frequently you move it, the more time you have between piano tuner appointments.

Cleaning The Inside Of Your Piano

While it is essential to clean your piano to remove grime, dust, and fingerprints, keep in mind that too much contact with its strings may affect the piano's tuning. It is best to time a thorough clean of your instrument right before the next tuning appointment as it promotes efficiency and cost-efficiency.

Regulate Room Moisture

Installing a tool such as a dehumidifier at the bottom of your piano can help maintain the temperature and moisture of the room where the piano sits. Not only does this keep the humidity of the room in check, but it also enables you to take further steps in maintaining your instrument's health.

Allowing Your Piano To Rest Too Close To The Wall

As walls tend to get warm particularly during the hottest times of the day, heat can directly be transferred to the instrument which can cause the wood to swell and the strings to loosen. Placing your piano strategically away from the walls allows you to capture everyone's attention during a performance as well as keep your instrument safe and properly ventilated.

Whether you own an imposing grand piano or a humble upright piece, tuning your instrument should be practiced well in advance of any signs of sound or playing ability deterioration appear. By getting in touch with us, you can be assured of the best in piano servicing as we provide countless benefits from our piano tuning in West Sussex.

Why Should I Keep My Piano In Tune?

First played at a public concert in London in 1768, strings huddled in a compartment at the instrument's rear determine your piano's sound quality. Stretch due to tension can cause the piano to go out of tune over time, adversely affecting both the equipment's and the pianist's performance, making a reliable piano tuner critical in ample piano maintenance.

Apart from being ever-ready to play your favourite classics, here are some of the reasons why keeping your piano in tune reaps you countless benefits:

Improves The Piano's Overall Tone

Much like any other instrument, a piano drops its pitch regardless of how often it is being used. This leads to an unpleasant flat sound each time that key is played which may unfavourably affect the whole ensemble. Along with their specialised tools and their skilled ears, professional piano tuners can tighten or reinforce the strings to correct their pitch back to their most appropriate setting, making certain that every chord works in harmony and is properly aligned with one another.

Averts Unforeseen Irreversible Damage

By following a regular piano tuning schedule, you immediately find out issues about your instrument that may be crucial in keeping it at its tip-top performance level. Certified piano tuners can effortlessly assess your instrument to make sure that every functioning part such as its dampers, hammers, and pedals are all in their best condition, allowing you to make wonderful and whimsical music for years to come.

Lengthens Your Piano's Service Life

Skilled and qualified technicians can prevent strings from getting too loose, saving you from unplanned repair expenses as bent-out-of-shape parts can potentially break over time. Not only does regular piano tuning preserve the sound quality of the instrument, but it also gives your piano tuner a chance to spot problems at the earliest stage, helping maintain your equipment's condition and performance.

Remarkably Cost-Effective

Depending on the quality and overall health of your instrument, keeping your piano in great condition means that you will need to tune it much less over time. While the more recent models require several visits from a piano tuner in their first 2 years, making sure that your piano is in great shape allows you to keep such appointments at bay as your equipment goes up in age.

While pianos are designed to play beautiful music for generations, failing to properly maintain your piece will significantly decrease its playing years. Keeping your instrument in tune can save you a considerable amount of money from refurbishing, replacement parts, and piano repairs if yours fails.

Schedule your regular piano tuning with us and we guarantee that your instrument will be performing at its best for a long time to come.

How Frequently Should A Piano Be Tuned?

No doubt, the climate where the piano resides plays a major role in its tuning. High humidity and sudden temperature changes can cause pianos to lose their tune, making it more challenging and costly to keep your piano in good working order. Even though you keep your piano away from direct contact with sunlight, as well as keep it clear from the heat coming from your walls, it is still ideal for a piano that is used heavily to be tuned at least twice a year. A new piano need to be tuned more often at least until it completely settles, while an older one is capable of keeping itself in tune a tad longer.
